Holowach Tree

Address: In the alley south of Jasper Avenue between 105 and 106 Street

Description: A heritage horse chestnut tree that was planted the Holowach family around 1920. Sam Holowach was one of the ealier Ukrainian immigrants to leave the farm an open a business in Edmonton. He operated a laundry business on Jasper Aveneue, when his son Walter brought the chestnust seed home from Vienna where hed had studied violin. Walter went on to play in the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Another son of Walter's, Ambrose, represented Edmonton for the Social Credit party in both the House of Commons in Ottawa (1953-58) and the Alberta legislature (1959-71), and in 1962 became the first cabinet minister of Ukrainian origin in the province. He served successively as provincial secretary and minister of youth, culture, and recreation.
