Ridna Shkola Ukrainian Heritage Language School of Edmonton

Ridna Shkola is for elementary school children from Kindergarten to Grade 5 aged from 5 to 12 years of age. Registration into Grade 1 requires completion of grade 1 in the regular school system.  Children aged 5-6 years of age could register into Kindergarten class. Ukrainian as a second Language classes are arranged according children’s age and language level ability.

Kindergarten: Ukrainian Language

Grades 1-3: Ukrainian Language, Catechism

Grade 4: Ukrainian Language, Catechism, Geography of Ukraine

Grade 5: Ukrainian Language, Catechism, History of Ukraine

Please Note!

Ridna Shkola does not duplicate the Ukrainian Bilingual Program, and it is not intended as a substitute for it. Rather, it complements, enhances and extends what students learn in the Ukrainian Bilingual Program.

Our schedule

Ukrainian Immersion classes are held every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Ukrainian as Second Language classes are held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Registration and the first day of classes begin on the second Saturday of September.

The school year goes from September to early June.

Our goals

  • To develop the oral language of the students and to enrich their vocabulary.
  • To teach students the Ukrainian alphabet and the writing system.
  • To teach students to read and comprehend a variety of Ukrainian texts.
  • To familiarize students with Ukrainian grammar and grammatical terminology.
  • To provide students with general knowledge of geography and history of Ukraine.
  • To extend the spiritual experiences of the students.
  • To provide students with opportunities to participate actively in religious and cultural celebrations.
  • To encourage students for further studies of the Ukrainian language and culture.
  • To nurture the love for the Ukrainian Language and eagerness to communicate with it.

School fees

Registration fee are $275 per school year for the first child and $225 for each additional child from the same family.  If finances are a concern, you may approach the Principal in confidence.
