The Ivan Franko School of Ukrainian Studies provides junior and senior high school students with a higher level of study of the Ukrainian language, history, culture and other subjects. The school serves learners in grades 7-10, generally aged between 12 and 17 years of age. Known as Kursy Ukrainoznavstva, our students generally join us after completing Ridna Shkola (grade 1 to 5 Saturday heritage school), or after completing the Grade 6 Ukrainian Bilingual program in the regular elementary school system.
What is also a unique strength of our program is that it is accredited by Alberta’s Ministry of Education and grants three years of high school credits to our graduates. The 15 credits in Ukrainian Language and Culture 10, 20, and 30, are added to each student’s high school transcript and diploma, representing completion of Language and Culture credits for grades 10, 11 and 12.
Our programs
The aim of Kursy is to give Ukrainian-speaking youth a deeper knowledge of the Ukrainian language, literature, history, geography, culture and music, so that this will increase their Ukrainian identity and pride. Students are always supplementing their studies with cultural activities in the school and in the community
Our schedule
The curriculum is divided into 4 school years.
Registration is on the second Saturday in September.
Classes are held on Saturday morning from 9:00-12:20.
