Recovering Relations: Ukrainian Settlers and Indigenous Communities

The guest speaker is Pamela Trischuk, Head of Education and Interpretation at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village.
This session explores the complex and often overlooked relationships between Ukrainian settlers and Indigenous Peoples in east central Alberta. We trace the colonial policies that shaped settlement, examine how Ukrainians both benefited from and contributed to these systems, and uncover stories through “breadcrumbs” in local histories, family narratives, and community teachings.
Participants will gain insight into why these early interactions were limited but meaningful, how attitudes shifted over time, and why neither Ukrainian nor Indigenous experiences were monolithic. Join us as we reflect on how to tell these stories today – acknowledging complexity, avoiding romanticized myths, and committing to the ongoing work of recovering good relations.
