SUMMARY:Recovering Relations: Ukrainian Settlers and Indigenous Communities
DESCRIPTION:The guest speaker is Pamela Trischuk\, Head of Education and Interpretation at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. \nThis session explores the complex and often overlooked relationships between Ukrainian settlers and Indigenous Peoples in east central Alberta. We trace the colonial policies that shaped settlement\, examine how Ukrainians both benefited from and contributed to these systems\, and uncover stories through “breadcrumbs” in local histories\, family narratives\, and community teachings. \nParticipants will gain insight into why these early interactions were limited but meaningful\, how attitudes shifted over time\, and why neither Ukrainian nor Indigenous experiences were monolithic.
