DESCRIPTION:The world premiere of Shumka’s UKRAINKA: The Four Faces of Lesya Ukrainka celebrates the renowned Ukrainian artist\, storyteller\, poet\, and humanitarian. \nLesya Ukrainka led a troubled life suffering from medical ailments that limited her physically\, she lived vicariously through her art. She is a legend among the Ukrainian diaspora\, and as a woman\, is especially inspiring in a patriarchal culture. \nShumka’s newest production focuses on the “four faces” of Lesya Ukrainka – the dreamer\, the traditionalist\, the lover\, and the leader. Her hope for Ukraine’s independence in a series of troubled times is as poignant as ever today.

SUMMARY:Shumka's Mosquito's Wedding in 3-D
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian Shumka Dancers are thrilled to announce the 3-D screening premiere of Mosquito’s Wedding\, Thursday\, November 9 at the Landmark City Centre Cinemas\, in Edmonton City Centre 10200 102 Ave NW. Tickets are $10 for big bugs\, and $5 for little bugs (children 10 and under). \nAn original stage production that premiered in 2018\, Mosquito’s Wedding (All We Need Is Love) is inspired by a traditional Ukrainian folk song. The 50-minute all-ages production features a number of insect characters from various “regions” of Ukraine. The dance lexicon\, musical compositions\, and sets\, costumes and props are associated with these ethnographic regions. The theme of the production is poignant\, being one of acceptance\, diversity\, and overcoming stereotypes. \nMosquito’s Wedding was filmed during Shumka on Tour in 2022 by Northern Gateway Films for a 3-D cinematic experience. Funded in part by Canada Council of the Arts: Digital Now Program.

Take the step to exciting dance opportunities\, great friendships and life-lasting personal development. Join Shumka in training\, the development of new works\, a “Whirlwind Summer” of festival performances\, and a 3-city Nutcracker tour – all in 2023! \nThe audition will include basic ballet barre\, character and contemporary combinations\, regional Ukrainian dance combinations\, basic acting while performing\, and an opportunity to demonstrate solos or acrobatics. \nAuditions are open to the entire dance community. Although experience in Ukrainian dance is an asset\, anyone with high-calibre training in ballet\, contemporary\, jazz\, or modern dance\, acrobatics\, or stage experience in another style of dance will be considered. Dancers must be at least 16 years of age in 2023. \nDancers in Shumka are not required to pay for tuition\, training or touring costs.
