SUMMARY:2026 Annual Shevchenko Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Russo-Ukrainian War through a Historian’s Eyes\nWith Serhii Plokhy \nFriday 6 March 2026\n6:30 p.m. MST \nLocation Change: The Annual Shevchenko Lecture will now take place in:  \nEngineering Teaching & Learning Complex (ETLC E1-001)(Ground Floor)\n9120 116 St NW\, Edmonton\, AB\nUniversity of Alberta\, Edmonton \n𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 | 𝘙𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥\nThe Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies is proud to announce the 60th Annual Shevchenko Lecture\, to be held on Friday 6 March 2026 at the University of Alberta. Serving since 1966 as a forum for important intellectual discussions concerning Ukrainian history\, nation building\, language\, literature\, culture\, and identity\, the Annual Shevchenko Lecture has presented eminent speakers such as Myrna Kostash\, James Mace\, Chrystia Freeland\, James Sherr\, and Alexander Vindman. \n2026 marks 60 years since the first Shevchenko Lecture in Edmonton\, initiated by the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association\, and 49 years since it has been sponsored by CIUS. As the institute’s oldest and most distinguished invited lecture\, it attests to our commitment to build and disseminate knowledge about Ukraine and Ukrainians in the world. \nThis year\, we welcome the well-known historian and author Serhii Plokhy from Harvard University\, who will deliver the 60th Shevchenko Lecture. \n“The Russo-Ukrainian War through a Historian’s Eyes” \nRussia’s invasion of Ukraine constitutes the largest war in Europe since 1945. It is also the first war to employ drones on a massive scale\, both in the air and at sea\, and the first major conflict that is widely characterized as hybrid warfare—combining conventional military operations\, cyberattacks\, and the active use of disinformation. The latter is a key element of the Kremlin’s war propaganda\, aimed not least at its own population as well as Ukraine and the outside world. How important have misuse and abuse of history been in the perpetration and justification of this war\, and what are the actual historical causes of the conflict? Why did Putin start the war―and why has it unfolded in previously unimaginable ways? Ukrainians have valiantly resisted a superior military; meanwhile\, the West has been vacillating as Russia colludes with allies in the international arena. The lecture will provide answers to these and related questions by tracing the origins of the Russo-Ukrainian war and explaining the reasons for the return of armed conflict in Europe\, the very same part of the world where the Cold War had ended thirty years earlier. \nRegister here: https://www.ualberta.ca/en/canadian-institute-of-ukrainian-studies/news-and-events/annual-lectures/shevchenko-lecture/2026-shevchenko-lecture.html

SUMMARY:2026 Bohdan Bociurkiw Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In honour of 100 years since the birth of Ukrainian historian and political scientist Bohdan Bociurkiw \n“A priest in Soviet Western Ukraine between Catholicism and Orthodoxy: Rev. Mykhailo Datsyshyn (1914–93)”\nPresented by Natalia Shlikhta\nFriday 20 February 2026\n7 p.m.\nSt. John’s Cultural Centre\, 10611 110 Ave NW\, Edmonton\, AB \nThe Bohdan Bociurkiw Memorial Lecture was established in November 2001 to honour the memory of Professor Bohdan R. Bociurkiw\, an eminent political scientist and internationally renowned specialist in human rights\, Soviet religious policy\, and Ukrainian church history. \nThis academic year we honour 100 years since the birth of Bohdan Bociurkiw (1925–98)\, and 50 years since the founding of CIUS\, recognizing his significant contributions to Ukrainian studies and to our institute. \n“A priest in Soviet Western Ukraine between Catholicism and Orthodoxy: Rev. Mykhailo Datsyshyn (1914–93)” \nBased on its imperialist and anti-religious policies\, the Stalinist leadership took aim at the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in Galicia shortly after this territory was incorporated into the USSR on the eve of World War II. The decision to forcibly “reunite” the “Uniate Church\,” as it was derogatorily called in Soviet-era documents\, to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) was driven by geopolitical considerations\, Soviet nationality policies\, and social engineering. \nThe 2026 Bohdan Bociurkiw Memorial Lecture will tell the story of the “reunited” UGCC ecclesiastical community through the life of Rev. Mykhailo Datsyshyn (1914–93)\, from the town of Stryi in Lviv oblast. Like many other Greek Catholic priests\, he officially “reunited” with the ROC and served in its parishes in Lviv oblast for nearly fifty years. During this time\, Soviet officials suspected him of being a “covert Uniate”; and indeed\, he also maintained connections with the hierarchy and clergy of the Ukrainian Church “in the catacombs.” However\, this did not prevent accusations of “apostasy” from his parishioners and fellow priests after the UGCC was revived in the early 1990s. Today\, the UGCC considers Rev. Datsyshyn a “martyr” who dedicated his life to preserving the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community and its traditions during the Soviet regime. \nRegister here:\nhttps://www.ualberta.ca/en/canadian-institute-of-ukrainian-studies/news-and-events/annual-lectures/bociurkiw-memorial-lecture/2026-bohdan-bociurkiw-memorial-lecture.html

SUMMARY:2024 Bohdan Bociurkiw Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian State and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Times of Russian Aggression: Religious Freedom\, National Security\, and the Rule of Law Contexts with Dr. Dmytro Vovk \n14 March\, 2024\n7 P.M. MT\nTelus International Centre\, Room 134\nUniversity of Alberta\n11104 87 St NW\, Edmonton \nIn this lecture\, Dmytro Vovk will analyze the legal measures implemented by the Ukrainian state to restrict or ban the operation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church historically and ecclesiastically connected with the Moscow Patriarchate. He will argue that\, while this conflict is often framed as a “religious freedom versus national security” case\, it should also be considered a part of a broader decolonization and de-Russification agenda\, endorsed by Ukrainian society and pushed forward by the Ukrainian state. However\, human rights and rule of law concerns will require a more well-balanced approach. \nRegistration is required. To RSVP\, please click the link below. \nThis is a hybrid event and can be joined in-person at the University of Alberta\, or via Zoom. \nFor questions contact lytwyn@ualberta.ca

SUMMARY:2024 Annual Shevchenko Lecture: Ukrainian Cultural Treasures Under Threat from Russian Aggression
DESCRIPTION:Since the start of the Russian war on Ukraine\, eight of the UNESCO World Heritage treasures in Ukraine have come under the threat of destruction. In the past two years of escalated war on Ukraine’s territory\, 872 cultural heritage sites and 1\,907 cultural infrastructure entities have suffered destruction\, and damage sustained by over 630 places of worship. To safely preserve Ukraine’s museum collections\, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine evacuated 43 museums and preserves. Extraordinary efforts have been expended toward protecting Ukrainian cultural heritage\, particularly by UNESCO. \nRemarkably\, some collections of Ukrainian cultural treasures have been repatriated during Russia’s war on Ukraine\, including Scythian gold from Estonia and the Netherlands. International agreements protecting cultural property are an important factor in preventing Ukrainian cultural treasures from being stolen and traded in global markets. \nPlease join CIUS and Ihor Ostash for a compelling lecture on the realities and impact of war in Ukraine on its cultural legacy. \nThe annual Shevchenko Lecture is organized by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies\, University of Alberta\, and co-sponsored with the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association (Edmonton) and the Alberta Foundation for Ukrainian Education Society.\nAbout the lecturer: Ihor Ostash is a Ukrainian politician and diplomat. He studied philology at Lviv Franko National University and law at Kyiv Shevchenko National University\, attaining the scholarly rank of Candidate of Sciences (PhD equiv.) and working in the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences as well as on a Harvard fellowship. As a People’s Deputy in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (1994–2006)\, Ostash was involved in foreign relations and in 1999–2005 was vice-president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE. He has been the Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada (2006–11) and Lebanon (since 2016). Ostash has written\, edited\, and compiled books and films about parliamentary diplomacy\, the popular songwriter Bohdan Vesolovsky\, and the Ukrainian community in Lebanon\, and has steered Arabic translation projects of well-known Ukrainian works.

SUMMARY:2023 Bohdan Bociurkiw Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:“𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙨𝙠𝙞𝙞 𝙢𝙞𝙧 : 𝗨𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻”\nAn online lecture from 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗶 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆𝗻𝘀𝗸𝘆𝗶\, Ukrainian Catholic University Lviv \nRussia’s war against Ukraine has affected Ukrainian society in its entirety\, Ukrainian Greek and Roman Catholics being no exception. Both churches have mobilized all their efforts to overcome the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and to provide various assistance to the military. Russia regards them as foreign bodies on the territory of the russkii mir\, agents of the “global West.” \nTherefore\, their existence is under the same threat of elimination as anything else related to Ukrainian identity as such. Ukrainian Catholics\, however\, face other unique challenges.
