SUMMARY:Kateryna Kryvolap
DESCRIPTION:KATERYNA KRYVOLAP\nMAR 08\, 2024 TO MAR 30\, 2024 \nWe are delighted to announce our March Signature Artist is artist Kateryna Kryvolap! \nExhibition will be on view at ACUA March 8 – March 30 during regular hours. \nGallery Hours\nTue-Thu 10am-4pm\nFriday 2pm-7pm\nSaturday 11am-3pm \nACUA\n10554 110 Street\nEdmonton \nKateryna Kryvolap is an artist originally from Ukraine who makes her home in Canada. She was raised and educated in an artistic family where she found her passion for fine art. \nAlthough Kateryna creates artwork of different styles\, her website is dedicated exclusively to both contemporary decorative and traditional decorative painting styles. According to the artist\, her paintings are more than fine art because they carry positive energy that is coded in symbolic decor elements. \nTraditional Ukrainian decorative painting arose out of a folk art which was believed to have the magical power to protect from sorrow. Depictions of certain elements such as birds and flowers represented prosperity\, harmony\, and happiness. \nWhen creating decorative art\, Kateryna dedicates her time to the extension of conventional boundaries by incorporation of techniques and styles of the past\, adapting them to the trends and materials of the present. Balanced colourful compositions with attention to small details combined with sophistication\, tell the viewer about the artist’s self-expression\, creativity\, and aesthetic taste. \nSince the perception of art is diverse\, people of different nationalities and countries collect Kateryna’s original artwork not only for decoration purposes but in order to possess the new heritage of decorative art.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian War Requiem
DESCRIPTION:The Axios Men’s Ensemble commissioned Benedict Sheehan\, a two-time GRAMMY® Award nominee\, to compose a Requiem in response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. This war\, which began in 2014 and escalated with a full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022\, has tragically claimed countless lives. The Requiem is a solemn tribute to these victims. \nSheehan’s composition\, spanning 12 movements\, draws inspiration primarily from the Byzantine burial service\, a ritual shared by Eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches. Reflecting Ukraine’s diverse linguistic and religious landscape\, the Requiem also weaves in elements from Jewish and Roman Catholic traditions. These varied texts serve multiple purposes: they offer solace and strength to the living\, especially those grieving; they provide a space for praying for both victims and aggressors; and they ultimately aspire to convey hope\, peace\, and goodwill. \nThe premiere of this work promises to be a profound experience. It is an expansive and sublime piece that skillfully blends modern musical styles with traditional Ukrainian motifs and ancient chants. This arrangement not only reflects the harsh realities of war but also echoes humanity’s deep-seated longing for peace\, goodness\, truth\, and beauty. \nFeaturing over 50 performers\, the ensemble includes members of the Axios Men’s Ensemble\, Pro Coro Canada—a professional choir based in Edmonton—and select soloists from North America and Ukraine. The performance will be under the direction of Maestro Michael Zaugg. \nThis Requiem is more than just music. It is a reverent homage to those affected by the war\, a reminder of the enduring human spirit\, and a heartfelt tribute to Ukraine and her people.

SUMMARY:From Rapid Response to a Longitudinal Study of War Experiences
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend this lecture by Dr. Natalia Otrishchenko\, visiting scholar from Ukraine\, presented in collaboration with the Department of Sociology Speaker Series. \nIn early 2022\, Ukrainian scholars faced a need to react rapidly\, both personally and professionally\, to the unprecedented reality of a full-scale Russian war of aggression. Natalia will speak about the international documentation initiative “24/02/22\, 5 am: Testimonies from the War”—an interviewing project that the Center for Urban History (privately founded academic NGO in Lviv\, Ukraine) started with research institutions from Poland\, Luxembourg\, Germany\, and the UK. \nIn 2024\, the project entered the second phase: interviewing the same cohort of people whose stories we recorded in 2022. Although the initiative arose under extraordinary circumstances\, it is inspired by many traditions: oral history\, trauma-informed and feminist scholarship\, Indigenous methodologies\, and critical archival studies. Natalia will describe how the rapid response documentation turned into the longitudinal project and emphasise that work within protracted uncertainty should include reflection on future scenarios. \nEvent Contact

SUMMARY:Folklore Lecture Series at the Kule Folklore Centre
DESCRIPTION:“Music & Comics: An intermedia lecture-recital exploring a music-based graphic narrative” \nJoin us on January 23\, 2026\, for the next Kule Folklore Lecture with Illia Pokotylo\, an\nMA graduate in Media and Cultural Studies\, MLCS. \nHow does music influence image and story? In this lecture-recital\, Illia Pokotylo will present Borys Liatoshynsky: A Life in Reflections (2025) — a graphic narrative about the Ukrainian composer that he co-created with visual artist Ihor Tvoronovych. The talk will explore how musical ideas can be reimagined through the visual language of comics\, using A Life in Reflections as a central example. The presentation will conclude with a live performance of excerpts from Liatoshynsky’s piano cycle “Reflections\,” which served as a foundational music piece for the creation of the graphic narrative. \n🗓 January 23\, 2026\n🕙 12 p.m. MDT\n📍 Student Lounge\, Old Arts Building\, University of Alberta\n💳Free admission (please register!) \n🔗 RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/music-comics-exploring-a-music-based-graphic-narrative-tickets-1980292955538?aff=ebdssbdestsearch \nIllia Pokotylo is a recent graduate of the Master’s program in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta. Originally from Kyiv\, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Ethnomusicology at the National Academy of Music of Ukraine. This interdisciplinary program shaped his initial interest in conducting research on how music — in its broad sense — is represented across non-sounding artistic media. During his Master’s program at the University of Alberta\, Illia examined the representation of music in graphic narratives such as comics and graphic novels\, which led to the creation of Borys Liatoshynsky: A Life in Reflections.
