DESCRIPTION:Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts Signature Artist Series: \n“Portrait Over Portrait: Following the Matrilineal Line is an ancestral exploration following Ukrainian heritage in our matrilineal line. We are exploring loved ones from memory\, imagining the faces and activities of passed relatives\, as well as referencing old photos. Through this work we are making meaning from our family history. In oil\, watercolor\, pastel\, crayon\, graphite\, and collage\, we are experimenting with our mother-daughter-artist relationship. We respond to each other’s work\, give each other prompts\, and even co-create on the same canvas. We are also exploring self-portraiture and examining characteristics that have been passed down\, noticing similarities and idiosyncrasies particular to the Haykowsky line. Through portraiture we are documenting stories of the women who came before us. These paintings are a way of bringing them to life and celebrating them.” \nPlease visit the website for exhibit hours.

As we read these tales there is a wonder as to what life held for individuals in the past. Film Fundraiser\n7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.\nIn the Gallery at Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts\n10554 110 St NW Unit 100\nBeats & Borshch is a fundraising event in of support Oy Marichka! a Canadian-Ukrainian themed movie from Edmonton native and award-winning writer/director Darcia Parada. She boards a transatlantic flight home but arrives too late. A magpie appears as Mary steps into the role of matriarch. Is it the soul of her mother guiding her? As the family grieves and plans the funeral Mary begs her boyfriend Todd in London to show\, but he doesn’t. Home for Christmas\, Joe\, a widowed pro-hockey player and his son deliver a package from his mother. As Mary fills her mother’s bakery orders\, tends to the farm\, and revisits her youth and Ukrainian customs her attraction to Joe grows. When Joe leaves\, she is torn and confused about her life’s direction. She returns to London\, finds Todd with another woman and high tails it back to Canada to reopen her mother’s bakery and a law office. Joe and Luke arrive at the opening with news that Joe has taken a nearby coaching job. The next Christmas Eve Mary hosts dinner for the family who are gathered and the magpie\, satisfied\, flies away.
