Drawing has always been her hobby and for the past seven years it has been her career. In her art she presents her loves\, her worries\, and her thoughts and since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion of independent Ukraine she represents more of her beautiful country within her drawings. Soon she knows she will draw a story of great victory. \nLiubov Kostetska \nLiubov Kostetska was born Ternopil\, Ukraine and now resides in Edmonton with her family. The clothing became extremely popular after the Russian invasion as people who moved out of Ukraine wanted something to remind them of their home. Her paintings are presented on a variety of clothing including jackets\, shirts\, and t-shirts using special textile paint. Every element has its own historical and cultural meaning. \nOlya Lisova \nOlya Lisova is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a Bachelors of Fine Art (Honours) degree\, along with diplomas in visual communication and design from UAlberta and MacEwan University. SUMMARY:Viktoria Grynenko: Contemporary Music from Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Works from Ukraine for violin by Bezborodko\, Bibik\, Loginov\, Pidhorna\, Silvestrov and Zavhorodnii \nDuring a difficult time\, Ukrainian new compositions show a burst of creativity. Other examples in music and art history during conflicts provide a comparison for discussion. The intimate space of McLuhan House offers an unparalleled opportunity to get to know not only these works but to understand and ask questions about contemporary composers’ creative exploration of sound\, dance and space. These are performed and discussed by Viktoria Grynenko\, a virtuoso violinist\, teacher and scholar of this music. After studies in Ukraine\, she holds a Ph.D. in Music from University of Alberta. She studies the skills of ballet and dance accompanists. \n“ My aim for this recital is to give the audience tools to listen to contemporary music\, what to listen for\, how to have an enriching experience and dialogue with the music\, and how to embrace the dissonance. Starting with Valentin Bibik and Valentin Silvestrov\, luminaries of new music in Ukraine\, we will move to Kyiv piano virtuoso Oleg Bezborodko\, Ukrainian-Canadian Anna Pidhorna\, and finish with the works by Boris Loginov and Ihor Zavhorodnii\, written after the 2022 Russian invasion. There will be complete performances and excerpts used to illustrate the lecture. ” (Viktoria Geynenko) \nProgram : \nBezborodko Concert Fantasy “Cossack Beyond the Danube” on Gulak-Artemovsky’s opera \nZavhorodnii “Lacrimosa” for violin solo \nSilvestrov “Melodies of the Moments” for violin and piano \nExcerpts for artist’s talk and discussion : \nPidhorna\, “Through closed doors” \nBibik “Sorrowful Music” \nLoginov “sleep during insomnia” quartet and electronics (recorded) \n(Program subject to change) \n50% of net proceeds will go to the Canada Ukraine Foundation’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

SUMMARY:Kule Folklore Lunch - Art Under Siege: the Legacy of Ukrainian Monumental Art of Alla Horska and Viktor Zaretskiy
DESCRIPTION:Art Under Siege: the Legacy of Ukrainian Monumental Art of Alla Horska and Viktor Zaretskiy\nPresented by Anna Morozova\, Graduate Student MLCS\nFebruary 9\, 2024 | 12pm MST | Kule Folklore Centre\nIn person presentation. \n“The research is based on a study of Ukrainian Monumental art of the 1960s in a close relationship with socio-political reality and Russian vandalism\, which led to the destruction of numerous Ukrainian monumental panels. My presentation will focus on the monumental art of Viktor Zaretskiy and Alla Horska\, who were dissident artists and members of the Sixtiers movement. \nI began my work with Zaretskyi’s archive in 2021 in Kyiv\, working with the sketches for his mosaics. Sadly\, I later discovered they were destroyed by Russian missiles in 2023. My presentation will focus on key aspects\, including the question of whether these monumental artworks served as soviet propaganda or represented a form of rival nationalism. Additionally\, I will analyze how dissident artists remember the ways in which soviet censorship restricted their artwork. Lastly\, I will address the unfortunate destruction of artists’ monumental panels due to the war in Ukraine in the years 2022-2023.” \nAnna Morozova is a Research Assistant at the Kule Folklore Centre\, a Graduate Student at the University of Alberta (Media and Cultural Studies)\, and a manager and tour guide at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada\, AB. MA in Cultural Studies at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. In 2020-2022\, Anna was responsible for the management of The Naked Room gallery in Kyiv\, while simultaneously processing Horska and Zaretskyi’s archive together with their granddaughter\, Olena Zaretska. In 2020\, Anna curated the exhibition “#PropertyRights” by Alevtina Kakhidze. \nTop image: Destroyed mosaic\, photo by Yevgen Nikiforov.\nBottom image: Anna Morozova.
