SUMMARY:Censorship\, Surveillance\, Resistance: Twentieth-Century Ukraine and Letter Writing
DESCRIPTION:Letter writing often conjures notions of separation in space and time\, and with reunion. What was it like to sustain and nourish personal relationships across borders and sociopolitical divides for Ukrainians under the constant scrutiny of the KGB? How did people manage to keep writing despite separation\, exile\, imprisonment\, forced labour\, wars\, and migration? \nScholars of epistolary culture from Canada\, Ukraine\, and the United States will examine international letter writing\, censorship and surveillance\, epistolary conventions and legislation\, anxieties and personhood under totalitarianism\, and related topics during the international symposium “Censorship\, Surveillance\, Resistance: Twentieth-Century Ukraine and Letter Writing” on 15-16 May 2023\, in the Senate Chamber at the University of Alberta. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Advance registration required.\nRegister here: https://app.groupize.com/e/censored-letters-symposium \nThis is an in-person event and will not be digitally streamed.\nPlease direct any questions to: lytwyn@ualberta.ca

SUMMARY:Genocide of the Crimean Tatar People
DESCRIPTION:Canada’s House of Commons unanimously recognizes Sürgünlik – the mass deportation of the Crimean Tatar People from their homeland in 1944 by the Soviet Communist regime – was an act of Genocide against the Crimean Tatar People. \nThe motion\, introduced by Member of Parliament Yvan Baker (Etobicoke Centre)\, and adopted unanimously\, affirms that the House of Commons: \nRecognizes that the mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars by the Soviet regime in 1944\, known as the “Sürgünlik”\, constituted a genocide against the Crimean Tatar people. \nIt designates May 18th of each year as Crimean Tatar Deportation (“Sürgünlik”) Memorial Day.\n“The recognition of the Sürgünlik as an act of Genocide and the establishment of an annual Memorial Day in Canada is an important step in ensuring historical justice and education\, and that this crime is always remembered. The Sürgünlik was an attempt by the Soviet communist regime to destroy the Crimean Tatar People\, the Indigenous people of Crimea. But through their courage and determination\, the Crimean Tatar People persevered\, and preserved their language\, culture and traditions\,” stated Alexandra Chyczij\, National President of the UCC. “We are grateful to MP Baker for introducing this motion and to all parliamentarians for supporting it.” \nToday\, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea\, an integral part of Ukraine and the ancestral homeland of the Crimean Tatar People\, suffers under illegal Russian occupation. The Crimean Tatar People are once again subject to systemic repression and attacks on their inalienable rights by a colonial Russian regime that seeks to subjugate Ukraine. Together with all citizens of Ukraine\, the Crimean Tatar People bravely resist the Russian occupation of Crimea and defend Ukraine against Russia’s war of annihilation. With God’s help\, the people of Ukraine will be victorious.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Vintage Fair - Launch Day
DESCRIPTION:What do you do… When you’re an artist who is forced to leave your home? \nFor these artists\, the answer to that question is… Continue making art. \nACUA Gallery & Boutique has accepted and continues to accept artwork and artisan goods from Ukrainian artists displaced by the war in Ukraine. If you see a round blue and yellow sticker next to an artwork\, this is to indicate that the artist is either a Ukrainian newcomer who has relocated to Alberta this past year\, or is a Ukrainian artist continuing to work from Ukraine. If you enjoy their work\, please consider supporting them.
