SUMMARY:Ukrainian War Requiem
DESCRIPTION:The Axios Men’s Ensemble commissioned Benedict Sheehan\, a two-time GRAMMY® Award nominee\, to compose a Requiem in response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. This war\, which began in 2014 and escalated with a full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022\, has tragically claimed countless lives. The Requiem is a solemn tribute to these victims. \nSheehan’s composition\, spanning 12 movements\, draws inspiration primarily from the Byzantine burial service\, a ritual shared by Eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches. Reflecting Ukraine’s diverse linguistic and religious landscape\, the Requiem also weaves in elements from Jewish and Roman Catholic traditions. These varied texts serve multiple purposes: they offer solace and strength to the living\, especially those grieving; they provide a space for praying for both victims and aggressors; and they ultimately aspire to convey hope\, peace\, and goodwill. \nThe premiere of this work promises to be a profound experience. It is an expansive and sublime piece that skillfully blends modern musical styles with traditional Ukrainian motifs and ancient chants. This arrangement not only reflects the harsh realities of war but also echoes humanity’s deep-seated longing for peace\, goodness\, truth\, and beauty. \nFeaturing over 50 performers\, the ensemble includes members of the Axios Men’s Ensemble\, Pro Coro Canada—a professional choir based in Edmonton—and select soloists from North America and Ukraine. The performance will be under the direction of Maestro Michael Zaugg. \nThis Requiem is more than just music. It is a reverent homage to those affected by the war\, a reminder of the enduring human spirit\, and a heartfelt tribute to Ukraine and her people.

The performance will be under the direction of Maestro Michael Zaugg. \nThis Requiem is more than just music. It is a reverent homage to those affected by the war\, a reminder of the enduring human spirit\, and a heartfelt tribute to Ukraine and her people.

SUMMARY:2024 Annual Bohdan Medwidsky Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Title: Folklore of Anger: Systemic Vernacular Imperialism and Ukrainian Responses to the Full-Scale Invasion of Ukraine by Russia \nPresenter: Dr. Mariya Lesiv\nBio: Mariya Lesiv is an Associate Professor of Folklore and current Head of the Folklore Department at Memorial University. She is the author of The Return of Ancestral Gods: Modern Ukrainian Paganism as an Alternative Vision for a Nation published by McGill-Queen’s University Press in 2013. Her work on belief and politics\, religious folklife\, diasporic culture\, and folk art has also appeared in edited volumes as well as scholarly journals\, including Anthropologica\, Journal of American Folklore\, Ethnologies\, Western Folklore\, and Folklorica. With Jeanmarie Rouhier-Willoughby\, she recently co-edited a special issue of Folklorica devoted to folklore and protest. Mariya is a recipient of a Social Studies and Humanities Research Council of Canada Insight Development Grant for her fieldwork-based project “HostRegion: PostSocialist Diaspora Communities in Newfoundland\,” devoted to recent immigrants to the province from the former Socialist countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Mariya is a former President of the Folklore Studies Association of Canada and current President of the Slavic\, Eastern European\, and Eurasian Folklore Association. \nDate: April 5\, 2024 | 3PM (MDT) \nLocation: BUS 3-05\, Alberta School of Business\, University of Alberta\, 11211 Saskatchewan Dr NW\, Edmonton\, AB T6G 2R6 \nDescription of Presentation:\nWar produces intense emotions that are frequently expressed in creative ways. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia has resulted in numerous such expressions communicated on the Internet. Frequently rooted in traditional curses\, the Ukrainian folklore of anger may be disturbing to many Western outsiders who treat tolerance\, positivity\, and niceness as societal virtues. In line with a folkloristic approach rooted in the understanding of insider perspectives behind creative practices\, I look at war-generated folklore by contextualizing the voices of its performers\, namely\, people directly affected by the Russian aggression. The concept of Russian systemic vernacular imperialism\, as historically manifested in smaller-scale imaginaries and acts – in the words and behaviours of regular citizens – and its role in fueling the ongoing war can shed some light on complex human emotions in traumatic contexts. It can also contribute to ongoing scholarly efforts to decolonize regional studies involving Ukraine and other countries that have historically operated under the Russian orbit.

DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian State and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Times of Russian Aggression: Religious Freedom\, National Security\, and the Rule of Law Contexts with Dr. Dmytro Vovk \n14 March\, 2024\n7 P.M. MT\nTelus International Centre\, Room 134\nUniversity of Alberta\n11104 87 St NW\, Edmonton \nIn this lecture\, Dmytro Vovk will analyze the legal measures implemented by the Ukrainian state to restrict or ban the operation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church historically and ecclesiastically connected with the Moscow Patriarchate. He will argue that\, while this conflict is often framed as a “religious freedom versus national security” case\, it should also be considered a part of a broader decolonization and de-Russification agenda\, endorsed by Ukrainian society and pushed forward by the Ukrainian state. However\, human rights and rule of law concerns will require a more well-balanced approach. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:2024 Annual Shevchenko Lecture: Ukrainian Cultural Treasures Under Threat from Russian Aggression
DESCRIPTION:Since the start of the Russian war on Ukraine\, eight of the UNESCO World Heritage treasures in Ukraine have come under the threat of destruction. In the past two years of escalated war on Ukraine’s territory\, 872 cultural heritage sites and 1\,907 cultural infrastructure entities have suffered destruction\, and damage sustained by over 630 places of worship. To safely preserve Ukraine’s museum collections\, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine evacuated 43 museums and preserves. Extraordinary efforts have been expended toward protecting Ukrainian cultural heritage\, particularly by UNESCO. \nRemarkably\, some collections of Ukrainian cultural treasures have been repatriated during Russia’s war on Ukraine\, including Scythian gold from Estonia and the Netherlands. International agreements protecting cultural property are an important factor in preventing Ukrainian cultural treasures from being stolen and traded in global markets. \nPlease join CIUS and Ihor Ostash for a compelling lecture on the realities and impact of war in Ukraine on its cultural legacy. \nThe annual Shevchenko Lecture is organized by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies\, University of Alberta\, and co-sponsored with the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association (Edmonton) and the Alberta Foundation for Ukrainian Education Society.\nAbout the lecturer: Ihor Ostash is a Ukrainian politician and diplomat. He studied philology at Lviv Franko National University and law at Kyiv Shevchenko National University\, attaining the scholarly rank of Candidate of Sciences (PhD equiv.) and working in the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences as well as on a Harvard fellowship. As a People’s Deputy in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (1994–2006)\, Ostash was involved in foreign relations and in 1999–2005 was vice-president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE. He has been the Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada (2006–11) and Lebanon (since 2016). Ostash has written\, edited\, and compiled books and films about parliamentary diplomacy\, the popular songwriter Bohdan Vesolovsky\, and the Ukrainian community in Lebanon\, and has steered Arabic translation projects of well-known Ukrainian works.

SUMMARY:Kateryna Kryvolap
DESCRIPTION:KATERYNA KRYVOLAP\nMAR 08\, 2024 TO MAR 30\, 2024 \nWe are delighted to announce our March Signature Artist is artist Kateryna Kryvolap! \nExhibition will be on view at ACUA March 8 – March 30 during regular hours. \nGallery Hours\nTue-Thu 10am-4pm\nFriday 2pm-7pm\nSaturday 11am-3pm \nACUA\n10554 110 Street\nEdmonton \nKateryna Kryvolap is an artist originally from Ukraine who makes her home in Canada. She was raised and educated in an artistic family where she found her passion for fine art. \nAlthough Kateryna creates artwork of different styles\, her website is dedicated exclusively to both contemporary decorative and traditional decorative painting styles. According to the artist\, her paintings are more than fine art because they carry positive energy that is coded in symbolic decor elements. \nTraditional Ukrainian decorative painting arose out of a folk art which was believed to have the magical power to protect from sorrow. Depictions of certain elements such as birds and flowers represented prosperity\, harmony\, and happiness. \nWhen creating decorative art\, Kateryna dedicates her time to the extension of conventional boundaries by incorporation of techniques and styles of the past\, adapting them to the trends and materials of the present. Balanced colourful compositions with attention to small details combined with sophistication\, tell the viewer about the artist’s self-expression\, creativity\, and aesthetic taste. \nSince the perception of art is diverse\, people of different nationalities and countries collect Kateryna’s original artwork not only for decoration purposes but in order to possess the new heritage of decorative art.
