SUMMARY:Lecturers from Ukraine on the Russian-Ukrainian War
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dmytro Sherengovsky and Dr. Halyna Protsyk of the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv) will cover the following issues in their online presentations: \nCONTEMPORARY HYBRID WARFARE AND ITS CHALLENGES FOR GLOBAL SECURITY: THE CASE OF THE RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN WAR\nWhat are the main tendencies of contemporary warfare and what is the impact on global security? What are the main domains of hybrid warfare and which elements can we observe in the Russian-Ukrainian war? What challenges do we need to meet in the new securitization agenda? \nFROM SECURITY TO SOLIDARITY: GLOBAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN WAR\nDestroyed lives\, destroyed homes and destroyed infrastructure are the immediate consequences of Russia’s unjust aggression in Ukraine. By the same token\, though\, the war also impaired the world’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic: inflation\, energy\, food and agriculture\, further supply-chain pressures\, security and defense\, migration\, and the global world order\, are among the many challenges the global community must tackle. As the global ramifications of the invasion have already taken hold\, we will discuss how we can act in solidarity in order to tackle these problems. What you can personally do to shape global solidarity?

SUMMARY:Kilim Mosaic with Theo Harasymiw
DESCRIPTION:In this 1-day workshop\, you will be assembling your own mini kilims (carpets). You will\nlearn about the tools used to cut glass\, tile and ceramic\, how to find your own materials\,\nsubstrates\, adhesives\, and general information about creating mosaics from various\nmaterials. We will have templates to help guide the process of how to design the kilim or\nhave the freedom to design your own. There will be an assortment of materials to\nchoose from when designing your layout which will excite the inner magpie – perfect for\nthose who like shiny\, blingy\, and a multitude of mosaic baubles! This is a very relaxing\nway to create a mosaic as it is very geometric and done on a small scale. At the end of\nthe workshop\, you will have a beautiful piece of artwork and the confidence to go on\nand create other small-scale mosaics. No previous experience is necessary. *Warning –\nthere is generally a lot of laughing in my workshops and often a little too much fun. \nCall 780-488-8558 or email programs@acuarts.ca for more details!

SUMMARY:Folklore Lunch - Rooster: A Symbol of Resilience in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:The Kule Folklore Centre is pleased to announce our upcoming Folklore lunch presentation: “Rooster: A Symbol of Resilience in Ukraine” \nPresenter: Victoria Kostyniuk\nWhen: 12 pm\, Friday\, February 17\, 2023\nWhere: Kule Folklore Centre\, 250 Arts & Convocation Hall\, University of Alberta. \nRooster: A Symbol of Resilience in Ukraine \nIn April 2022 when Borodyanka\, Ukraine was liberated\, the world was taken aback by photos of a ceramic rooster\, peacefully sitting on a shelf in an apartment which had been destroyed by bombs. This rooster has since become a symbol of the resilience shown by the people of Ukraine. It has been gifted to political leaders who have visited Ukraine\, brought knowledge of Ukrainian folklore to the general public through various exhibitions\, and has even been the subject of internet memes. This presentation will explore the history behind ceramics and pottery in Ukrainian culture\, the symbolism of the rooster in Ukrainian folklore\, and its newfound fame after being rescued from a shelf in Borodyanka. \nVictoria Kostyniuk received her BA in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies\, focusing on Ukrainian and Slavic Studies\, from the University of Alberta in 2021. She is currently completing her MA in Transnational and Comparative Literature in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. She hopes to continue her research in the future on Ukrainian church halls in Alberta and their role as heritage spaces for Ukrainian Canadians. In her spare time\, Victoria is a Ukrainian dance instructor with St. Basil’s School of Dance. \nSee our website here: https://www.ualberta.ca/kule-folklore-centre/news/2023/february/folklore-lunch-rooster.html \nThis is an in-person event\, however the presentation will be available on our Youtube channel and our website after the event: http://ukrfolk.ca/\nFor more information\, contact: ukrfolk@ualberta.ca
