DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the Shumka School of Dance 2026–2027 Season. \nThe Shumka School of dance provides classes in Ukrainian regional\, character\, Royal Academy of Dance ballet and Shumka-style training to youth ages three and up. Students receive structured progressive training from accomplished and supportive instructors\, building the essential foundation for youth to discover their artistic selves\, set and achieve goals\, and feel empowered to become future leaders. \nThe 29-Week Season runs from September 12 2026 – May 1\, 2027.

DESCRIPTION:In 2026\, the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta will mark the fiftieth anniversary of its founding. To celebrate this milestone\, CIUS will host an international symposium\, Recentring the Humanities: Ukraine and the World. \nThe symposium will (re)consider the place of Ukraine\, Ukrainians worldwide\, and Ukrainian studies in a rapidly changing global order\, particularly in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It will examine the conceptual and epistemic shifts in scholarly discourse prompted by Ukraine’s heightened geopolitical and cultural visibility. SUMMARY:Benedict Sheehan’s ‘Ukrainian War Requiem’ — The National Tour
DESCRIPTION:Edmonton’s own Axios Men’s Ensemble\, in celebration of their historic Juno award\, for Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble) for the recording of their Ukrainian War Requiem\, has announced a national tour of nine Canadian cities this November. \nComposed by two-time Grammy-Nominated Benedict Sheehan\, this monumental choral work spans 12 impactful movements that seamlessly blend modern musical styles with ancient chants and traditional Ukrainian motifs. The choral tribute serves as a powerful musical reverence for those affected by the war\, offering solace and strength to the living and the grieving\, and ultimately providing a solemn space for remembrance and prayer through a skillful and heartfelt tribute to Ukraine and her people. \nConducted by Maestro Michael Zaugg\, the choir will feature over 50 performers from Axios Men’s Ensemble and Pro Coro Canada\, including acclaimed international soloists from North America\, Europe\, and Ukraine. SUMMARY:Canada's Ukrainian Nutcracker by Shumka
DESCRIPTION:An annual Christmas tradition\, Shumka’s Nutcracker blends the grace and lyrical nature of classical movement with the strength and power of Ukrainian character dance\, leaving audiences exhilarated and entertained. The cast of over 70 features Shumka dancers\, youth from the Shumka School of Dance\, and beautiful voices from Clara’s Dream Choir. \nShumka is excited to announce this year’s Nutcracker will feature the return of Shumka company members dancing the lead roles including Leda Tarnawsky (Clara)\, Nicolas Pacholok (Prince)\, Joshua Pacholok (Drosselmeier)\, and Annikka Dobko (Sugar Plum Fairy). This was always a dream for Shumka’s annual production and a triumphant success in 2025. \nTouted as “Canada’s Ukrainian Nutcracker\,” the production is a folk ballet based on the timeless Christmas classic. It incorporates Ukrainian traditions\, folk and character dance\, grand orchestral versions of the legendary score with specially added compositions\, Ukrainian carols and cultural symbols woven into lavish sets and costumes. \nNot only is Shumka’s Nutcracker a luxurious Christmas performance loved by all; it is also a truly collaborative work\, created by an ongoing partnership between Ukrainian and Canadian artists. Music arrangements are by Yuri Shevchenko of Ukraine\, choreography by Viktor Lytvynov of the National Ballet of Ukraine and former Shumka Artistic Director John Pichlyk. The production is under the direction of Shumka’s Artistic Director\, Tasha Orysiuk. Costumes and sets by Maria Levitska of the National Opera of Ukraine\, and lighting by Edmonton’s Jeff Osterlin. \nA holiday experience audiences will return to again and again.
