SUMMARY:Carmella & Mika Haykowsky: Portrait Over Portrait Following the Matrilineal Line
DESCRIPTION:Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts Signature Artist Series: \n“Portrait Over Portrait: Following the Matrilineal Line is an ancestral exploration following Ukrainian heritage in our matrilineal line. We are exploring loved ones from memory\, imagining the faces and activities of passed relatives\, as well as referencing old photos. Through this work we are making meaning from our family history. In oil\, watercolor\, pastel\, crayon\, graphite\, and collage\, we are experimenting with our mother-daughter-artist relationship. We respond to each other’s work\, give each other prompts\, and even co-create on the same canvas. We are also exploring self-portraiture and examining characteristics that have been passed down\, noticing similarities and idiosyncrasies particular to the Haykowsky line. Through portraiture we are documenting stories of the women who came before us. These paintings are a way of bringing them to life and celebrating them.” \nPlease visit the website for exhibit hours.

Their art combines traditional motifs and ornaments with modern values in order to preserve Ukrainian color and authenticity. \nSol by Olha Frolova\nOlha is an artist from Kyiv\, Ukraine\, now living and creating in Edmonton. Drawing has always been her hobby and for the past seven years\, it has been her career. In her art\, she presents her love\, her worries\, and her thoughts. Since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion of independent Ukraine\, she represents more of her beautiful country within her drawings. Soon\, she knows she will draw a story of great victory. \nRosalyn Wyntjes\nTeacher and artist Rosalyn Wyntjes has been working on eggs for over 30 years through her company Eggs & Stitches. She has learned many different styles besides traditional including drapanka\, stained glass\, trypillion\, etched\, and her new favourite\, raised wax. In addition to chicken eggs she also works on ostrich\, rhea\, emu\, goose\, duck\, pheasant\, and quail eggs. Rosalyn was recently award January’s Egg of the Month in raised wax for Egg Art International magazine\, her third time appearing in the publication.
