Interested in cultural history?
Positions are available for students wishing to acquire or improve heritage research skills and fieldwork experience. Fieldworkers will help record and photograph cemetery tombstones in east central Alberta as part of ongoing efforts of the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project to document rural church properties. Training will be provided.
Responsibilities:
Community relations – attend community events and festivals to promote the Documenting Church Properties in Rural Communities in Alberta initiative.
Community outreach – work with parish clergy and volunteers to document and photograph cemetery headstones in church properties and cemeteries of east central Alberta.
General office work – process research data and photographs into central database.
Required Education/ Skills:
- Completion of high school, current enrolment in a post-secondary institution
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel and digital camera software
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Bilingual, Ukrainian/English is strongly desired
- Travel is required; should have a valid driver’s license and be prepared to provide own transportation (compensation for mileage) if necessary.
Duration: July, 2010 – August, 2010; possibility of extension into fall, 2010
Wage: $12.00 per hour (35 hours per week, some weekend work)

The Documenting Church Properties in Rural Communities initiative has been made possible with the major support of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada-Edmonton Eparchy, and the Ukrainian Self-Reliance Association-Edmonton Branch, who have provided most of the funding to date. Research Assistant, Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village
Description: Interested in research, history & culture? Working with the Senior Historian, the Research Assistant will facilitate in the promotion and development of various research initiatives based on the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village Research Programme. You will be responsible for updating and maintaining the research collection; conducting occasional library & archive searches; data entry; converting materials for website use; updating digital manuscripts into publishable format; assisting in fieldwork photo documentation; and managing exhibits/ displays.
You will have the opportunity to gain experience while networking with other disciplines, on the applications of theoretical knowledge for popular consumption.
The successful candidate will enjoy dealing with people of all ages and backgrounds, have highly developed verbal communication and presentation skills, be mature and responsible, and have strong organization and time management skills. Studies in history, anthropology, folklore or computer science would be considered an asset. English is required, a working knowledge of Ukrainian is highly desirable.Knowledge of other languages would be beneficial.
Start Date/ Duration: July to August 28, 2010 (Monday to Friday, although some weekend work will be required). Possibility of extension into fall, 2010. Some travel may be required for promotional programs.
Salary: $15.00 per hour
